Choi In-Ho

Kim Jin-Y
Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the mediating effects of adolescents¡¯ capacity for empathy on the relationship between maternal parenting behaviors and adolescent problem behaviors.

Methods: The subjects in this study were 558 second-year middle-school students (266 males and 292 females) in Incheon City. The researchers analyzed the data using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, hierarchical multiple regression analysis, and the Sobel test.

Results: Male students¡¯ capacity for affective empathy had a statistically significant mediating effect on the relationship between mothers¡¯ permissiveness/nonintervention parenting behavior and male students¡¯ externalized problem behavior. This mediating effect was also present in the relationship between mothers¡¯ rejection/restriction parenting behavior and male students¡¯ externalized problem behavior.

Conclusions: The ability of male adolescents to develop and demonstrate empathy significantly influenced maternal behaviors and the adolescents¡¯ problem behaviors.
